UAE Airports Unveil AI-Driven VAT Refunds, Slashing Wait Times to One Business Day

Departing visitors leaving the United Arab Emirates can now finalize their tax refund claims in minutes and receive funds in as little as one business day. The Federal Tax Authority (FTA), in direct partnership with operator Planet Tax Free, has officially deployed an artificial intelligence-driven tourist VAT refund system across three primary international aviation hubs: Dubai International Airport (DXB), Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah International Airport.

The digital upgrade replaces legacy manual verification workflows with biometric validation, automated fraud prevention checks, and dynamic routing designed to streamline exit points ahead of peak holiday travel seasons.

How the New AI Refund System Operates

Under the previous system, international shoppers routinely waited around nine business days to receive reimbursement funds on eligible goods bought across the country. The new platform condenses validation into three swift digital steps through the updated mobile application:

  1. Pre-Registration: Before arriving at departure gates, tourists download the official application, complete facial verification, and upload secure passport and payment card details.
  2. QR Code Scanning at Exit Points: Upon reaching the airport, travelers scan dynamic QR codes located at designated refund service zones, instantly triggering automated data matching between retail transaction tags and exit manifests.
  3. Automated Dynamic Verification: The system’s algorithms cross-check transaction data in real time. If an item requires a physical check, automated smart gates equipped with facial recognition scan the traveler’s face and route them directly to dedicated self-service kiosks, eliminating physical queuing for standard clear transactions.

Major Boost for Travel, Shopping, and Bureaucracy Reduction

This deployment aligns directly with broader government directives aimed at eliminating unnecessary administrative steps across public services. The Federal Tax Authority projects processing capacity to handle roughly four million individual refund transactions between late 2026 and late 2027, total reimbursement values approaching 692 million Dirhams ($188.4 million) over that period.

Since the initial rollout of digital tax refunds in 2018, more than 25 million tourist tax refund claims totaling AED 4.2 billion have been processed. Over 16,700 retail points of sale across the UAE are now fully linked to the digital network, allowing visitors purchasing eligible items—minimum spend AED 250—to claim back 87% of the paid 5% VAT.

Tourists leaving through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah can select their preferred reimbursement destination, including credit cards, debit accounts, or digital payment wallets, with cleared payments dropping directly into accounts within 24 hours of exit confirmation.
