Tourists Flee Seaside Resorts as Raging Wildfires Sweep Across Greece and Germany
A relentless heatwave sweeping across Western and Southern Europe has triggered devastating wildfires, threatening major tourist destinations and forcing thousands of residents and holidaymakers to flee.
From the coastal resorts of northern Greece to the dense pine forests of western Germany, emergency services are battling out-of-control blazes fueled by gale-force winds and record-breaking summer temperatures.
Sea Evacuations in Greece: Flames Wall Off Resort Beaches
In northern Greece's popular Halkidiki peninsula, hundreds of panicked tourists were forced to evacuate by sea after a wall of fire—estimated at nearly 3 kilometers long—reached the coastal resort village of Siviri.
With flames blocking inland roads and burning balconies of seaside holiday apartments, local authorities deployed a fleet of coast guard patrol vessels, private craft, and local fishing boats to rescue trapped vacationers directly from the beach.
"We were on the beach watching huge black plumes of smoke turn the sky gray. The flames got too close to the land routes, so our only way out was onto the boats," reported one evacuated visitor.
According to the Hellenic Fire Service, over 150 firefighters, backed by specialized water-dropping aircraft and helicopters, are struggling to contain active blazes across the region amid wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h.
Germany Battles Blazes Amid WW2 Ordnance Hazards
Meanwhile, in western Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia state, a major forest fire in the Hürtgen Forest forced the complete evacuation of the village of Gey, situated near the Belgian border.
All 1,800 residents were ordered out of their homes as flames advanced within 300 meters of residential neighborhoods. Firefighting operations have been critically hindered by a unique and deadly hazard: unexploded World War II ammunition buried in the forest floor detonating due to intense ground heat.
German emergency agencies, coordinated through the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), have established safety perimeters while specialized equipment and firefighting personnel attempt to douse the perimeter.
Record Temperatures Fuel Fire Risk Across Europe
The active blazes coincide with near-record levels of wildfire activity across the continent. Real-time environmental tracking from the European Union's Copernicus EFFIS Portal indicates that extreme to very extreme fire danger ratings currently cover vast swathes of Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe.
