Resilient US Travel Demand Drives IHG’s Third-Quarter Revenue Above Forecasts

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the parent company behind household hospitality brands like Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, and Kimpton, surpassed market expectations in its third-quarter financial updates. The momentum was largely driven by robust domestic and international travel among American consumers, which effectively offset softer market conditions in Greater China and regional geopolitical headwinds.

The London-listed hospitality giant reported a 5.3% year-over-year increase in global Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR)—a vital performance indicator for the hotel industry. This outpaced average Wall Street consensus estimates of around 4.4%.

American Consumer Strength Propels Growth

Despite broader economic uncertainty and shifting consumer spending patterns, American travelers continue to prioritize experiences and overnight stays. Performance across IHG’s Americas segment expanded by 6.8% during the quarter.

Chief Executive Officer Elie Maalouf pointed out that U.S. momentum was broadly distributed across all brand tiers, benefiting both midscale offerings like Holiday Inn Express and luxury options like InterContinental Hotels. A notable factor contributing to this resilience is the profile of domestic U.S. travelers, many of whom choose to drive rather than fly, shielding leisure drive-to markets from fluctuations in airfare.

Additionally, business travel continues to show structural recovery. Business transient revenue grew 4% year-over-year, while group bookings saw a noticeable 10% surge, reflecting renewed momentum in conferences, team gatherings, and corporate events.

Global Offsets and Expansion Pipeline

The strong performance in North America and Continental Europe was crucial in balancing out weaker quarters in specific international regions. RevPAR in Greater China contracted by 3.3%, impacted by adverse weather conditions and changes in public holiday scheduling. Performance across parts of the Middle East remained flat, influenced by ongoing regional instability.

Despite these regional variations, IHG expanded its physical footprint at a rapid pace. The hotel group opened 92 properties during the quarter (adding nearly 13,000 rooms) and signed contracts for 164 additional locations. IHG's global development pipeline now stands at more than 350,000 rooms, representing over 30% of its existing global footprint.

Executive Outlook and Full-Year Expectations

Management reaffirmed its confidence in meeting full-year performance expectations. The company is on track to achieve earnings-per-share growth near the top end of its long-term target of 12% to 15%. IHG has also returned significant capital to investors, completing over $700 million in share buybacks this year as part of its broader $1.2 billion capital return commitment.

While analysts noted potential cost pressures for upcoming fiscal periods—including anticipated increases in pre-tax interest expenses—the company’s scale, brand diversification, and fee-based revenue model continue to provide a solid foundation against macroeconomic volatility.
