Incheon Passes London Heathrow and Changi to Lead Global Passenger Rankings

South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has officially taken the top spot as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic, overtaking traditional aviation giants London Heathrow and Singapore Changi.

Preliminary half-year data compiled by Airports Council International (ACI) reveals that Incheon processed 38.39 million international travelers between January and June 2026. That puts the East Asian aviation hub roughly 600,000 passengers ahead of second-place London Heathrow (37.79 million) and well ahead of third-place Singapore Changi (34.53 million). The historic milestone marks the first time Incheon has topped the global international transit rankings since opening in 2001, capping a multi-decade rise from 10th place in 2002 to 3rd in 2024.

Geopolitical Shifts and Transit Surge Drive Record Numbers

The shift at the top of global aviation rankings stems from both long-term infrastructure investment and dramatic changes in international travel routes. Disruption to flight corridors across Middle Eastern hubs diverted vast volumes of long-haul transfer traffic through East Asia.

Incheon recorded an 18.1% year-on-year surge in transfer passengers during the six-month period, reaching 4.24 million travelers. Transfer traffic on European routes alone jumped 63.2% as travelers sought alternative long-haul connections. Simultaneously, inbound tourism to South Korea reached record highs, with foreign visitors making up a record 44.4% of total passenger traffic in the second quarter.

Infrastructure Expansion Prepares Incheon for Long-Term Dominance

While Heathrow continues to operate near capacity limits, Incheon’s recent fourth-phase expansion—completed in late 2024—boosted its annual passenger capacity to 106 million. The airport currently hosts 101 carriers connecting 183 cities across 53 countries.

Kim added that the airport corporation will focus on further enhancing passenger convenience, artificial intelligence operations, and regional connectivity to maintain its global leadership.
