Etihad Airways Accelerates Africa Expansion with Strategic Partnership Trifecta Ahead of 2026 Route Rollouts

Etihad Airways has finalized three regional airline partnerships across West and Southern Africa, setting the foundation for a strategic network expansion that will double its footprint on the continent.

Throughout July 2026, the UAE flag carrier established interline and codeshare agreements with Zimbabwe’s Fastjet, Nigeria’s Air Peace, and Ghana-based Africa World Airlines (AWA). The strategic moves come ahead of Etihad's planned launch of six new non-stop African destinations—including Lagos, Accra, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Harare, and Asmara—scheduled to begin rolling out between November 2026 and March 2027.

Building a Two-Way Corridor Between Africa, Asia, and the Gulf

The commercial expansion is designed to position Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport as a high-efficiency transfer hub connecting fast-growing African economies with key markets across India, China, and Southeast Asia.

By partnering with regional operators, Etihad extends its reach into more than 20 secondary African cities—such as Abuja, Kano, Abidjan, and Douala—on a single ticket.

"When our new African routes take off, the partner network behind them will already be in place," said Arik De, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer at Etihad Airways. "By aligning our partner network ahead of our own direct flight launches, guests and cargo customers will experience seamless onward connectivity across West, Central, and Southern Africa from day one."

Key Destinations and Launch Timelines

Etihad will operate widebody Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft across all six upcoming routes, providing significant belly-hold cargo capacity to support trade in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and manufacturing:

• Asmara, Eritrea: 4 weekly flights launching November 7, 2026.
• Accra, Ghana: 4 weekly flights launching March 17, 2027.
• Kinshasa, DR Congo: 3 weekly flights launching March 18, 2027.
• Lagos, Nigeria: Daily service (7 weekly flights) launching March 18, 2027.
• Harare, Zimbabwe & Lubumbashi, DR Congo: 3 weekly linked flights launching March 24, 2027.

Aligning Trade Alliances and Aviation Strategy

The airline’s continental push closely mirrors broader economic and diplomatic initiatives led by the United Arab Emirates government, including bilateral trade expansion and the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) framework.

With air cargo demand between Asia and Africa continuing to grow, Etihad’s parallel network expansion in both mainland China and sub-Saharan Africa creates an integrated trade bridge via the Gulf.
