China’s Golden Week Travel Boom — Millions Take Off in Record-Breaking Holiday Surge

China’s national transport hubs are buzzing again as the annual Golden Week holiday unleashes one of the largest seasonal migrations on the planet.

Triggered by the convergence of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, this year's break has morphed into a mega-holiday for millions of workers who paired official days off with paid annual leave to stretch their time off to as much as 13 consecutive days. The result is a historic surge in long-haul international travel, packed bullet trains, and a fundamental shift in how Chinese holidaymakers spend their time and money.

Extended Itineraries and Early Departures Define the Season

Data from major online travel platforms reveals a clear trend toward longer, multi-destination journeys. According to booking reports from Trip.com Group, hotel stays of seven nights or more surged by 123% year-over-year, while multi-city flight itineraries climbed 84%.

Unlike previous years where travel was heavily concentrated on the first official day of the holiday, more than half of outbound travelers opted to leave early. Key departure spikes were recorded days before October 1st as savvy travelers beat the traditional rush hour.

"Travelers aren't just looking for quick weekend getaways anymore," notes market insights from Dragon Trail International, a travel trade research firm tracking Chinese outbound sentiment. "The extended holiday window has reopened appetite for deep exploration across Europe, East Asia, and emerging international destinations."

Top Destinations — Short-Haul Favorites and Explosive Hotspots

While regional Asian powerhouses remain the main choice for primary outbound trips, long-distance routes are showing remarkable growth:

  • Regional Favorites: Japan, South Korea, and Thailand continue to lead total outbound volume, with cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Seoul capturing massive short-haul flight shares.
  • Emerging Growth: Countries offering visa-free access or unique cultural experiences, such as Georgia and Kazakhstan, saw search interest leap by nearly 300% on platforms like Xiaohongshu.
  • European Cities: Cultural hubs including London, Frankfurt, Geneva, and Venice experienced double- and triple-digit booking increases compared to previous seasons.
